Today，our lecture is about women's literature.

The development of women's literature can be divided into three stages.The first stage is from the 1840s，when many women writers used male names，to 1880 with George Eliot's death.The second stage is from 1880 till women won the right to vote in 1920.The third stage is from 1920 till the present day.

The first stage includes women writers such as the Brontes，Elizabeth Barrett Browning，and George Eliot.These women tried to be a part of the male­ruled society.Many of them felt a conflict between obedience and resistance，which appeared in many of their novels.Their works were mainly about marriage.

In the second stage，women writers came out against the traditional standards and values，and they demanded more rights.They wrote about social problems，translating their own suffering to those of the poor，the working class and slaves.They demanded changes in the social and political systems that were unfair to women.

The third period is characterized by women's self­discovery.Some women writers have begun to search for identity.We have been in this period since the 1960s.
