THEME AND BACKGROUNDNov. 15th_18th, 2009, Jinhua Educational and Research Office held a meeting for primary and middle school English teachers. This meeting aims how to fill in the gap from primary English learning and teaching to junior. At this meeting ten English teachers from different counties presented lessons, five for primary English and five for junior. It ends up with hot discussion after the two invited professors gave their criticism more than praise. Lucky or unlucky, I was one of the ten teachers who was criticized the most. Politely and silently in my seat, I have received all the criticism in my life that day. This essay attempts to clarify the three major arguments on that lesson including my teaching purposes, contents as well as my teaching philosophy.

MR. PROFESSOR’S CRITISM

  The teacher is pushing children to run after fancy cars and clothes at the beginning of the class by labeling herself with famous.

MY DESIGN PURPOSES

After several teaching trials, Famous is one of the language difficulties in this lesson. I use it as my name which can increase the repetition of the word and make Ss remember this word easily. I have never had that special intention. Perhaps I can seek a better way to avoid that inclination.

T give a Jinhua pancake to those students who did a good job in finding out the right slogans for each item.

MR. PROFESSOR’S CRITISM

 Many teachers incline to reward Ss with food . How can this really happen in their daily classes? If so, that might be a financial burden for teachers.

MY DESIGN PURPOSES

Thanks for Mr. Professors consideration. These cookies are not only rewards for Ss but also a next teaching step preparation. When they get the cookies and smell them, they need to figure out a slogan for it. It is not free. You bet no one would like to do the hard work if I just show them a picture of pancake.

It is usual that Ss can only watch the pictures and pretend they are tasting or drinking them. However, we are glad to buy a bottle of Coke and milk and let the lovely kids share it without causing any financial problems. Anyway, sensation is the direct way to learn something new.
