第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Have you ever received a gift that was so clearly not your taste that you wondered if perhaps it had been handed to you by mistake? Worse, have you ever given a present and watched your friend look as though she had opened the wrong box? Maybe she responded with a polite “Why, thank you,” but you knew you had missed the mark. Why do presents sometimes go wrong? And what do your choices(good and bad)reflect about your personal qualities?
Choosing the right gift is an art, I believe, It calls for empathy—the ability to put yourself into someone else’s head and heart. We’re all able to do this; in fact, we’re born with a kind of natural empathy. After the earliest period of childhood, however, it needs to be reinforced(加强)—by our parents, teachers, friends, When it isn’t, we’re not able to understand other people’s feelings as sharply. This can show in the gifts we select , and so can many other emotional(情感的)qualities.
Think back to the presents you’ve given over the past year, the time and effort you put into your selection, how much you spent, your thoughts while you were shopping, and your feelings when the receiver opened the package. Keep in mind that what you choose displays you inner world.
Of course, you may express yourself differently with different friends, relatives, and other people you know.
We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication. Ignoring the tradition won’t make it go away. If you really dislike such a tradition, tell your friends ahead of time.
51.The underlined expression “you had missed the mark ” means “you had failed to _______”.
A.make her feel better
B.keep your friendship
C.receive a present in return
D.get the expected effect
52.Which of the following is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.Natural empathy needs to be reinforced.
B.Emotional changes influence one’s choice of gifts.
C.Selecting the right gift is an ability people are born with.
D.Choosing gifts requires one to understand the receivers.
53.In the third paragraph, the author tells us that________.
A.attention should be paid to the receivers’ responses
B.one learns from what he did in the past
C.the choice of gifts reflects one’s emotional qualities
D.one should spend more time choosing gifts
54.The best possible title for this passage is “_______”.
A.Ways of Choosing Gifts
B.An Important Tradition
C.Exchanging Presents
D.Message in a Gift
B
An environmental group called the Food Commission is unhappy and disappointed because of the sale of bottled water from Japan. The water, it angrily argues in public, has traveled 10,000 “food miles” before it reaches Western customers. “Transporting water half-way across the world is surely the extremely stupid use of fuel when there is plenty of water in the UK.” It is also worried that we are wasting our fuel by buying prawns(对虾)from Indonesia(7,000 food miles)and carrots from South Africa(5,900 food miles).
Counting the number of miles traveled by a product is a strange way of trying to tell the true situation of the environmental damage done by an industry. Most food is transported around the world on container ships that are extremely energy-efficient(高能效的). It should be noted that a ton of butter transported 25 miles in a truck to a farmers’ market does not necessarily use less fuel on its journey than a similar product transported hundreds of miles by sea, Besides, the idea of “food miles” ignores the amount of fuel used in the production. It is possible to cut down your food miles by buying tomatoes grown in Britain rather than those grown in Ghana; the difference is that the British ones will have been raised in heated greenhouses and the Ghanaian ones in the open sun.
What the idea of “food miles” does provide, however, is the chance to cut out Third World countries from First World food markets. The number of miles traveled by our food should, as I see it, be regarded as a sign of the success of the global(全球的)trade system, not a sign of damage to the environment.
55.The Food Commission is angry because it thinks that .
A.UK wastes a lot of money importing food products
B.some imported goods cause environmental damage
C.growing certain vegetables damages the environment
D.people waste energy buying food from other countries
56.The phrase “food miles” in the passage refers to the distance .
A.that a food product travels to a market
B.that a food product travels from one market to another
C.between UK and other food producing countries
D.between a Third World country and a First World food market
57.By comparing tomatoes raised in Britain and in Ghana, the author tries to explain that .
A.British tomatoes are healthier than Ghanaian ones
B.Ghanaian tomatoes taste better than British ones
C.cutting down food miles may not necessarily save fuel
D.protecting the environment may cost a lot of money
58.From the passage we know that the author is most probably .
A.a supporter of free global trade
B.a member of the Food Commission
C.a supporter of First World food markets
D.a member of an energy development group
C
Monarch butterflies(黑脉金斑蝶)are a common summer sight in the northern United States and Canada. These large orange and black insects(昆虫)brighten parks and gardens as they fly lightly among the flowers . what makes monarchs particularly interesting is that they migrate(迁飞)—all the way to California or Mexico and back. They are thought to be the only insect that does this.
Every year is in the late summer monarchs begin their journey to the south. Those heading for Mexico go first for the Louisiana-Mississippi area, then fly across the Gulf of Mexico into Texas. Once in Mexico, they settle themselves in one of about fifteen places in a mountain forest filled with fir tree. Each place provides a winter home for millions of monarchs. The butterflies are so many that they often cover entire tree. When spring comes, they begin their long journey north.
The question is often asked whether every butterfly makes the round-trip journey every year. And the answer is no. The average monarch lives about nine months .So one flying north might lay eggs in Louisiana and then die .The eggs of that generation may be found in Kentucky; the eggs of the next generation may end up in Wisconsin or Michigan. The last generation of the season, about the fourth , will make their way back to Mexico and restart the journey.
Scientists learn about monarchs’ migration by catching and making marks on the insects. By recatching a monarch with such a mark and noticing where it came from, the next scientist can get to know things like the butterfly’s age and it’s routing(路线)
59. One of the places where monarchs spend the winter is __________.
A .the Gulf of Mexico B. an area in Mississippi
C. a forest in Mexico D. a plain in Texas
60. The routing of monarchs’ migration can be learned _________.
A. by examining the marks made on them
B. by collecting their eggs in the mountains
C. By comparing their different ages

61. What is the subject discussed in the passage?
A. Migration of monarchs B. Scientists’ interest in monarchs

Thinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be human is to think. But thinking may come naturally without your knowing how you do it. Thinking about thinking is the key to critical thinking when you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes. Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others.. Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education.
The word “critical” here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen---beyond the pictures on TV, the untrue reports in the newspapers, and the faulty reasoning.
Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity .If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker. If you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker,
Activities of the mind and higher-order reasoning are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time ,and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today’s world ;fast foods, instant coffee, and self-developing film. If you are among the people who believe that speed is measure of intelligence, you may learn “something new” from a story about Albert Einstein. The first time Banesh Hoffman, a scientist, who to discuss his work with Albert Einstein, Hoffman was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately put Hoffman at easy by saying, “Please go slowly, I don’t understand things quickly.”
67. Critical thinking is important to us because if we do not think critically,____________
A. it will be heard for us to think naturally and fast
B. we might be controlled by other people’s ideas
C. we will follow the ideas of others naturally
D. we might be fooled by other people’s ideas.
68. If you are a critical thinker, you will___________
A. think deeply about different ideas
B. trust the reports in the newspapers
C. take one view against another view
D. criticize other people for their mistake
69. In the last paragraph, “something new” suggests that_________
A. the smarter you are, the faster you do things
B. the faster you do things, the smarter you become
C. speed can improve intelligence
D. intelligence is not decided by speed
70. What would be the best title for the passage?

书面表达
Most of the students will go to their classmates or friends when in trouble. They're almost of the same age, so they can talk with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles and ask for their help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can’t get on well with others. They have few friends.
In my opinion, when in trouble we’d better ask our teachers, parents, friends or classmates for help. Different people have different experiences. And they are likely to help you out of the troubles. Then you can remove some of your difficulties and feel relaxed.
