The fifth teaching period
Teaching content: Integrating Skills
Teaching Aims:
Get the students to grasp the main idea of the text so as to improve their reading ability.
Teaching Important Points:
How to analyze an article so as to grasp its main idea.
Teaching Difficult Points:
How to improve the students’ reading ability and how to analyze an article.
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1 Revision
Have a dictation.
Step 2 Fast-reading
Give the students a few minutes to read the text and answer the following questions.
1.What was Charles Darwin’s hobby when he was young?
When he was young, Darwin enjoyed doing all kinds of experiments and studying physics, chemistry and later botany was his hobby.
2.What led Darwin to write his famous book “On the Origin of Species”?
When he was 22,he was invited to take part in the scientific expedition on the Beagle. His observations on the five-year voyage led him to write his famous book On the Origin of Species.
3.Who founded the science of genetics?
It was the research work of Mendel that gave birth to the science of genetics.
4.Who made a contribution to the improvement of the output of crops according to the text?
Mendel’s genetics and Turesson’s findings are both important to the output of crops.
Step 3 Reading and comprehension
Tell the students to read the text carefully again and answer the following questions. Let them to discuss their answers. Then check their answers with the whole class.
1.What did Darwin discover about bird species in Galagagos?
The differences in habitat and source of food led to different species.
2.What did Mendel observe in his experiments with peas?
He found that many characteristics were passed on from one generation to the next, without influence by the environment.
3.Looking at wild plant species in Sweden , what did Turesson discover?
He showed that differences between plants of one species occurred as a result of the environmental conditions in the habitat.
4.What were Darwin’s discoveries based on?
Step 4 Language points:

Step 5 Analyzing
Help the students to analyze the following sentences.
1.It was Darwin’s visit in the Beagle to the Galapagos Isles that gave him the key ot his new theory.
2.Back home ,in England ,Darwin realized that differences in habitat could lead to different species in birds as well as in plants.
回到英国,达尔文意识到栖息地的差别会导致鸟类的差别,植物也一样。
3.Although his experiments were designed to support the ideas concerning tie influence of environment upon plants., he found that many characteristics were passed on from one generation to the next, without influence by the environment.

4.When growing on rocks, the plant grows to a bush , having broad leaves and large flowers.
5.However, Turesson’s findings show that habitat, such as soil conditions, is of equal importance to the output of crops.
