Biggest and smallest
All miniscule and gigantic items should be perfectly scaled-down or scaled-up versions of the real thing. They must be made from the correct materials and be fully functioning.
Collections
Interest in big collections, such as the world’s biggest collection of Barbie dolls, is evident from the many requests we receive from collectors. To be considered for inclusion, collections should be contain broadly similar, but different, items. Duplicates do not count.
Food records
Could you bake your way into the record books? Any attempt at creating large food items, such as the tallest cake, largest box of chocolates, or the longest sausage must be edible, and shown to be made hygienically. Big food needs to be a scaled-up version of the smaller thing, and all the ingredients must be the same.
Records to avoid
Some records are just too dangerous, too easy, too specific, or just plain too boring to attempt. So before you attempt a record, read this list of what NOT to submit.
Some record suggestions are, frankly, far too dangerous for us accept, especially if there is risk to spectators and members of the public, as well as to the individual participant or participants. Others are simply not enough of a challenge, too specific to an individual, or unbreakable.
Chewing gum
The only record we accept relating to chewing gum is largest collection of gum wrappers. "Most Gum Chewed" and "Longest Time to Chew Gum" both rely on other factors e.g., the size of your mouth and the length of time you can go without sleep. Neither of which are acceptable record categories.
Driving on public roads
For safety reasons, we now no longer accept any records involving a race against the clock that takes place at any time on public roads.
For example, "World Circumnavigation by Car" and "Fastest Time to Drive the Pan-America Highway" are records that have at one time appeared in Guinness World Records but which we are now unable to ratify for safety reasons.
Heavy pets
we have recently stopped accepting claims for heaviest or lightest pets. We appreciate that the welfare of the pet would be, in the majority of cases, at the forefront of the owner’s mind. We had, however, become increasingly concerned that owners would potentially be encouraged to over- or under-feed their pets in the quest for recognition. Therefore, to avoid any undue suffering to any animal, we have ended our interest in such records.
Horseback records
We cannot endorse speed records for travelling over large distances on horseback, primarily because of concerns over the welfare of the animals involved. It may well be that you proceed in a responsible and humane manner, but it must be remembered that the very definition of a record is that it is something that can be broken. By accepting your claim we are implicitly endorsing future attempts in which other riders will of necessity push the horses harder.
Longest URL
This record is currently rested, which means that no one can attempt this record and become a new record holder. It has been rested because there is no merit whatsoever in a long URL. It takes little to no effort and is similar to taking the largest number in the world and then adding 1 to it.
Place to place records
We receive many proposals regarding the fastest journeys between different points (towns, natural landmarks, etc), both within countries and between different states.
Since there is potentially an almost infinite number of such points, we must out of necessity select only those which are significant internationally (e.g. trans-continental) or which over time have become the subject of much international competition (e.g. swimming across the English Channel, or sailing across the Atlantic).
Poetry Unfortunately, owing to the very subjective nature of poetry and the difficulty of even defining the word "poem", we do not consider any claims for poetry, other than what might ordinarily fall within our broader publishing records.
Qualifications
We cannot accept records such as "Most Degrees" or "Most Qualifications". This is because each academic institution in the world has its own criteria for teaching and assessing, and there is therefore no global standard on which to base a record.
For the same reason, we do not accept records relating to qualifications gained by young or old people.
Small writing
There are a great many people who claim to be able to write a great deal of text on grains of rice, human hairs and other small objects. However, recent advances in science have allowed engraving and printing on a microscopic scale that will never be achieved by the human hand, and for this reason we no longer entertain record claims for smallest writing.
Small stuff
In the case of small items such as "Smallest Pencil" and "Smallest Origami", quality cannot be proven, and it reaches a point where it becomes impossible to judge. While microscopic analysis is available at the atomic level, most of the smallest claims will be rejected.
Speed construction
For safety reasons, records involving the rapid construction of buildings have been rested.
Uniqueness
"Uniqueness" or "originality" are not objectively quantifiable and cannot therefore form the basis of a world record. It must be remembered that every record we publish is open to be challenged in future, and it must be possible to compare these future challenges objectively and fairly with the current record.
